Curriculum – PSHE

At Neville’s Cross Primary School & Nursery, we have introduced a whole school PSHE scheme called Jigsaw. Jigsaw combines PSHE, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.

Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike. Our ‘Star of the week’ focus highlights a theme from that week’s learning across the school, and encourages children to try to reflect that learning in their behaviour and attitudes.

Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July), allowing for whole school themes and the end of Puzzle product, for example, a display or exhibition (like the Garden of Dreams and Goals) to be shared and celebrated by the whole school. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.

Relationships & Sex Education

An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’ puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term.

There are four main aims of teaching RSE:

  • To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
  • To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
  • To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
  •  To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.

Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage. At no point will a child be taught something that is inappropriate; and if a question from a child arises and the teacher feels it would be inappropriate to answer, (for example, because of its mature or explicit nature), this information with be shared with you by your child’s class teacher. The question will not be answered to the child or class if it is outside the remit of that year group’s programme.

Below is a summary of RSE coverage within the Jigsaw scheme for each year group:
• Foundation Stage – Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies
• Year 1 – Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts
• Year 2 – Boys’ and girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which parts of the body are private and why this is)
• Year 3 – How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they grow older
• Year 4 – Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation
• Year 5 – Puberty for boys and girls, and conception
• Year 6 – Puberty for boys and girls and understanding conception to birth of a baby

What does PSHE look like at Neville’s Cross?

At Neville’s Cross Primary School, we offer a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded. As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. We want our children to become ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society as well as the global community. PSHE is delivered throughout the school from Nursery – Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school, using the Jigsaw PSHE scheme. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, our children acquire knowledge, understanding and the skills they need to manage their lives now and in their futures.

Intent, Implementation and Impact:

  • The Intent provides information on the provision of PSHE.
  • The Implementation provides the subject overview detailing how PSHE is taught.
  • The Impact shows improvements seen as a result of our implementation of PSHE.

Intent

What will take place before teaching in the classroom?

The school’s senior leadership team will …

  • Lead the school staff to develop a curriculum intent consistent with school’s drivers and development of all curriculum subjects.
  • Develop specific PHSCE subject intent, which explains our school ethos and curriculum design in detail.
  • Support subject leader to spend time with staff to share skills.
  • Provide funding to support high quality implementation of the PHSCE curriculum.

The curriculum leader will ...

  • Understand and articulate the requirements of the curriculum.
  • Use this knowledge to support staff in the delivery of PHSE.
  • Develop confidence in staff when delivering PSHE lessons.
  • Ensure skills and knowledge are planned for progressively over time so that children become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
  • Develop a long-term subject plan, which identifies the progression within each phase of knowledge, skills and vocabulary in PHSE.
  • Support staff to have a full picture of learning in PHSE at each stage, including EYFS so prior knowledge is constantly referenced accurately.
  • Catalogue and organise an up to date range of resources so children have access to equipment, which supports them to extend their skills as a designer.
  • Establish and nurture links within the local community so that children can ‘practice’ and apply skills in ‘real life’.
  • Network with other local schools to keep up to date with subject development.

The class teacher will, with the support of the curriculum leader …

  • Work in teams to develop curriculum skills grids, which outline the knowledge and skills to be covered over the course of each term and share with parents and carers.
  • Use the long-term subject plan to ensure coverage in lessons is sequential, includes balance between knowledge and skills and references prior learning.
  • Seek out the subject leader if they require support or advice.
  • Ensure lesson resources are engaging, appropriate and plentiful so children can learn knowledge and practise skills across the series of lessons.
  • Plan experiences, trips and visitors, which both enhance learning and place learning into context.
Implementation

What will this look like in the classroom?

Our teaching sequence will be ….

We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

Jigsaw PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

Lessons or ‘pieces’ will be delivered weekly with each class working on the same ‘puzzle’ at the same time. Each ‘piece’ is structured with the same components.

Connect Us- a game or activity designed to build and maximise social skills, engender positive relationships and enhance collaborative learning.

Calm me- helps children gain awareness of the activity in their minds, relaxing them and quietening their thoughts and emotions to a place of optimum learning capacity.

Open my mind- enables children to filter out activity around them not significant to this learning intention, thereby improving concentration and learning.

Tell me or show me- this section is used to introduce new information, concepts and skills.

Let me learn- children manipulate, use and play with the new information in order for it to make sense to them and for them to ‘accommodate’ it into their existing learning.

Help me reflect- by reflecting, children process and evaluate what they have learnt which enables them to consolidate and apply their learning.

Closure- each piece needs safe closure.

Our classrooms will…

  • Provide a nurturing environment for learning where children, whatever their age can work individually, in pairs and cooperate in small groups.
  • Contain age-appropriate equipment specific to PHSE for children to use and refer to.
  • Have a designated ‘Jigsaw’ display including the Jigsaw charter, vocabulary and ‘End of Puzzle’ outcome for each half term.
  • Have the relevant ‘Jiggie’ (Jigsaw friend) for their year group(s) and Jerrie cat which are used during lessons.
  • Have storybooks on display that cover a range of themes related to PSHE.

Our children will be …

  • Enthused by their learning because coherent learning experiences give them the confidence to reach beyond their grasp.
  • Engaged by the challenge within lessons to demonstrate their knowledge.
  • Encouraged by specific feedback given by their teacher to reflect on their work and areas to improve.
  • Nurtured to show confidence in contributing to their learning through sharing thoughts and ideas.
  • Develop PSHE skills and confidence over time due to carefully planned, sequences of high quality lessons over time.
Impact

How will this be measured?

Pupil voice will show …

  • Enthusiasm and confidence in discussing their learning and experiences in PHSE.
  • A clear understanding of the skills and knowledge relating to PHSE, needed to be independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society.
  • A progression of the vocabulary used to articulate their learning and experiences in PHSE.
  • In the classroom, our children will have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, push themselves and persevere.
  • They will have a good understanding of how to stay safe, healthy and develop good relationships.
  • Our children will have an appreciation of what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. They will have a strong self-awareness, interlinked with compassion of others.

Displays around school and books will show ...

  • Pupils have a balance of planned learning experiences including practical evidence in photographs on Seesaw and work on display.
  • A varied and engaging curriculum, which develops a range of PSHE skills.
  • Clear progression of skills in line with those identified on the long term plans.
  • That pupils, over time, develop a range of skills and knowledge across all parts of the PSHE curriculum.
  • Children will record learning in their ‘Jigsaw journal’ and these will be carried through each Key Stage so that previous learning can be referred to and built upon.

The curriculum leader will …

  • Provide information to parents and carers about the content of our PSHE curriculum, through workshops and newsletters.
  • Liaise with the SMSC committee when necessary.
  • Lead Key Stage assemblies to introduce new ‘puzzle’ themes.
  • Ensure that ‘End of Puzzle’ outcomes are being completed and displayed in each class.
  • Collate a portfolio of evidence, which reflect children’s deepening knowledge and experiences in PSHE over time.
  • Monitor standards of teaching, lessons and work.
  • Provide CPD opportunities including mentoring and coaching.
